Miami, FL. (December 2024) – Independent Living Systems (ILS) and its Medicaid health plan subsidiary, Florida Community Care (FCC), were proud to sponsor the Special Olympics’ Race for Inclusion, which took place in Miami earlier this month. This inspiring event supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) by building communities where individuals with IDD are treated with respect and given opportunities to reach their full potential in a world of inclusion and acceptance.
“Sponsoring the Race for Inclusion aligns perfectly with our mission to support vulnerable populations and empower people to improve their quality of life,” said Nestor Plana, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ILS and FCC. “We celebrate the incredible resilience and determination of these individuals, alongside the community that strengthens them.”
The 5K run/walk is part of the statewide Race for Inclusion effort supporting more than 75,000 Special Olympics athletes across the state and more than 9,000 athletes in Miami-Dade County. The campaign features races across Florida and fosters inclusive communities, schools, and workplaces where people with intellectual disabilities are empowered to reach their full potential and achieve their dreams – on and off the playing field.
Staff from ILS joined the event and cheered on the athletes and encouraged participants to achieve their competitive goals.
“At Independent Living Systems, we believe every individual should be empowered to reach their full potential. Supporting the Special Olympics Race for Inclusion is an extension of that commitment,” said Plana.
FCC was selected by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) to operate Florida’s Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Pilot Program serving residents of Hardee, Highlands, Hillsborough, Polk, Manatee, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.
Launched earlier this year, the IDD Pilot Program is a Medicaid initiative designed to deliver comprehensive, integrated care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program uses a managed care model to improve access to services and foster independence for participants.
