The National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA) hosted a regional forum in Miami, Florida titled “Building Bridges to Engage Diverse Communities” with opening remarks made by Nestor Plana, Chairman, and CEO of Independent Living Systems (ILS), a health services company dedicated to improving the quality of life for at-risk populations including the frail, aged, and those with special needs. NHCOA hosts annual regional conferences in locations across the country with the highest concentration of Hispanic seniors and Latino families. The Miami event, hosted by Miami Dade College’s InterAmerican Campus, engaged Latinos and their caregivers as well as community leaders and professionals in discussions designed to improve the livelihood of Hispanic seniors.
“It is a privilege to support the NHCOA in their mission to further educate caregivers on the issues that impact seniors and places them at risk for being placed in institutional facilities” says Nestor Plana, ILS’ Chairman, and CEO. “Caregivers in Hispanic communities make significant societal and financial contributions toward maintaining the well-being of their loved ones and events like this one provide the informational resources and support specific to the needs of the Hispanic caregiving community.”
The purpose of the NHCOA regional conferences is to raise awareness and to educate and inform seniors and their families on how to access information and support services that will enable them to live independently as they age in their homes and communities. The featured training and information presented at the Forum spanned a variety of topics including community resources, health and wellness information, financial resources, and other Hispanic specific community information.
